How to select a hosting package shared vs reseller vs VPS

Are you running any website ? facing any issue with hosting ?? (Or) Are you going to create any blog/e-commerce websites ? Then this blog will be really very helpful to select or migrate to the right hosting package.

Why we need hosting ?

Many of you know why we need hosting. But describing here in 2 lines for beginners, If you want to create a website you need two things.

  1. Domain (website name. Eg: ngdeveloper.com)
  2. Hosting (Server/system to place the content of the site.)

Important thing to understand:

We can buy both from single domain/hosting provider or domain from one provider and hosting from another provider, we can just map the both by specifying the name space shared by the hosting package provider in the domain DNS mapping.

Many of us (including myself at beginning) got this doubt. So you can plan to purchase the domain name and hosting package based on the feedback, discounts from whomever you want.

How to pick/select the hosting package ?

Selecting the right hosting package is really a tough thing till you understand the things very clearly. To help you select the right hosting here are few things shared below,

  1. What’s your requirement (is it a blog/eCommerce site/video/image share site)
  2. What will be your approximate expected visitors/users ?
  3. Are you need more spacing (if videos/images obviously you need more spacing)
  4. SEO friendly ?
  5. Looking for full control ?

Shared Hosting vs VPS vs Reseller hosting:

Shared Hosting:

Shared hosting is nothing but, same server is shared to many domains. Even though disk space, ftp accounts, email accounts, databases are allocated to some limits to each users, still system performances like CPU,RAM, Mysql servers, Mail Servers and Apache servers are  shared to all users.

Pros:

  • Cost will be very cheap.
  • No technical skills required.
  • Easy to maintain, since server maintenance and technical difficulties will be taken care by hosting service provider itself.

Cons:

  • If any of the hosted domain uses more traffic/resources, then it will surely affect the other domains too.
  • Very less control over the configuration/customization of server files.

Recommended To:

Small websites/new websites.

Virtual Private Server (VPS):

Virtual private server is a web server where physical server is divided into multiple virtual private servers. Here each VPS is allocated with it’s own software and hardware resources.

Pros:

  • Performance is better than shared and reseller hosting.
  • Security is good, because no other domains or accounts can violate yours.
  • Resources are yours, so other domains can not interfere and affect it.

Cons:

  • Cost effective than shared and reseller hosting.
  • Technical skill is required to maintain and work with server installations, support and maintenance activities.

Recommended To:

Most recommended to medium size e-commerce websites.

Reseller Hosting:

Buying the server resources in bulk and sharing/hosting many other domains under this reseller hosting.

Pros:

Resource control (allocate the resources limits to each domains).

Cons:

  • More expensive than shared hosting.
  • Basic technical skills at least required to support the hosted domains.
  • Still some limitation over the server files configuration/customization’s, because reseller hosting is also provided from the shared servers only.

Recommended To:

  • If you are running/maintaining many small websites then purchasing and hosting all the domains under reseller hosting will be cost effective and even most recommended.
  • Most recommended to new hosting business starters, because it helps a lot to start your new hosting business with this and learn the business and technical skills required.

Hope you got the required information’s to select your best hosting platform/package. Wishing you best of luck for your business/websites.
